Shopify says coding agents changed the economics of building twice

Textbook dual-platform workflow showing a shared specification feeding Swift and Kotlin implementations through agent translation, platform review, parity tests, and a release gate.

Summary: Shopify is moving its mobile apps from React Native back to separate Swift and Kotlin codebases. Its engineering team says improved coding agents can translate features between platforms, help developers cross skill boundaries, and maintain parity through shared specifications, tests, and review checkpoints; React Native had worked well, but a core cost assumption changed.

Why it matters: Generative AI can change architecture decisions by lowering duplication costs, but only when specifications and tests are stronger than the generated implementations. Shopify’s account is a single-company case study, not proof that native rewrites are generally cheaper, and migration cost and long-term maintenance still need measurement.

What to do now

Reprice one old constraint: Identify a duplicated workflow whose economics may have changed, then compare agent-assisted delivery using one shared specification and acceptance suite.
