Looker Data Apps connects natural-language app creation to governed business metrics

Focus: Applied Generative AI for Knowledge Workers

A build-time agent assembles a React data app above a governed semantic foundation of LookML metrics, row-level access and inspectable SQL; the runtime app uses native APIs and requires approval before source-record updates.

Summary: Google Cloud launched Looker Data Apps in preview, allowing agents to generate interactive applications hosted within Looker. Apps inherit LookML metrics, row-level permissions, and existing data governance while supporting scenarios and downstream tasks beyond ordinary dashboards. Google says model tokens are spent when building the app, not for subsequent native Looker API interactions.

Why it matters: Knowledge workers can specify a business decision workflow instead of exporting spreadsheets into ungoverned prototypes. Pilot one app using a sanctioned metric, inspect generated SQL, verify each role's visibility, and require approval before any operational write or external dispatch.
