GitHub gives JetBrains teams explicit controls over agent models and MCP startup

Managed default and user model picker converge at session initialization. A separate MCP gate remains off with tools disabled. Diagnostic Fix branches to agent mode with isolated worktree and reviewed diff, or to ask mode.

Summary: GitHub's October 10 JetBrains release makes two often-hidden engineering decisions explicit: which model starts an agent session and when tool servers are allowed to become active. Enterprise administrators can define the default agent model for new conversations without removing the user-visible picker. A new MCP setting allows automatic server startup for Copilot and Claude to be disabled, making tool activation an intentional operator decision rather than an incidental side effect of opening chat. The diagnostic Fix action now opens inline Copilot chat and selects agent mode when available, falling back to ask mode otherwise. GitHub also lists improvements to account switching, navigation, language-server startup, model-provider switching, customization updates, worktrees and tool-call displays. The plugin has ended support for JetBrains 2025.1. These are product capability changes, not evidence that any particular organization's approval or sandbox policy is correctly configured. For an engineering team, a practical rollout test is to set the administrator default, open a new conversation, verify the chosen model, leave untrusted MCP endpoints disabled, and record which diagnostic fixes require explicit approval before a tool runs.

Why it matters: An agent's nominal model and tool inventory should be treated as configuration-controlled execution inputs. Without an MCP startup boundary, merely entering a development session may activate integrations with broader privileges than intended. Document the approved model, tool-server allowlist, worktree and account context; then deliberately test three cases: passive chat, a code diagnostic and a tool-mediated Fix. Capture session logs and the actual file diff before approving changes. The release gives administrators concrete switches; engineering assurance still requires independent verification against local policy.
